Biography

jibril seeks existentially, exploring his nigerian heritage & truth
Jibril’s work, as he simply puts it, seeks to recover the wisdom of past Nigerian traditional knowledge and to then transpose it into language of the present. His background in architecture gives him a very rounded entry into structure & form, and from this base, he has developed ideas way beyond the scope of just architecture. His work very often moves through the intersection of memory, spirituality, and Nigerian histories.
In his practice, Jibril has explored a variety of mediums for expression: oil painting, photography, experimental design, and IoT-enabled prototypes. Using the latter, in 2024, he built a food storage prototype
and exhibited it at the renowned Ars Electronica festival in Linz, Austria. The prototype was built on the knowledge of traditional yam storage practices in North-eastern Nigeria and then infused with modern technology to improve its performance.
His ongoing projects range from deconstructing aesthetic and socio-political elements of historical Hausa architecture in Nigeria, to constructing a floating pavilion that drifts on water, collecting environmental data while embodying indigenous knowledge of resilience and survival.
In summary, the artist’s work simply explores fragments of his ancestral heritage and carries them into dialogue with new technologies or reinterpreting them in a contemporary framework.
